Kormilda College Boarding: Children’s Commission Photo Competition

On Sunday 29 October 2017, nine Aboriginal students of Kormilda College made their way to an exhibition of the Children’s Commission (organised by Alex Billeter).

It was the final of a photo competition titled “Show us the real you”. Stuart Ward had taken great effort to enter photographs of as many Boarding students as possible, taken by himself and Maibrit Grundel with an overwhelming result: photographs of thirteen students have been selected to be in the best thirty of the Northern Territory!

Sunday was a fun morning in Smith Street Mall, in the city: the students could see their displayed photo, and talk to the ABC News journalists. Some gained new knowledge of the work of the “News” people, looked at the “big camera” and saw how it worked. They also had the chance to take a photo of themselves posing next to their photo and develop it on the spot to take home. What a great experience for everyone!

All of them have already won, as being in the best thirty is a great honour, but it will be topped with the exhibition travelling around. It will travel through the surrounding communities, so that many family members will have the chance to marvel at the photos!
Savannah Marambu’s grandma and sister couldn’t wait that long, and made the effort to come to the exhibition where you could feel the pride they have for their young family member.
Additionally, some more prizes were won: Eli Guyula, with a photo taken by Stuart Ward won a creative price, which Lennie Lami Lami collected on his behalf.
John Guyula has been very successful: his photo, taken by Maibrit Grundel, came second in the whole competition, and it will be displayed (acknowledging him and the photographer) in campaigns by the government! The Minister of Education, who was present, loved the photo and asked John some questions about it. He won a $100 voucher!
Finally, a photo with everyone, including the organisers and Minister of Education, was taken and the rest of the Sunday could be enjoyed with a feeling of pride!

Well done everyone!
