A World of Opportunity

IYLP Gather in Sydney

Three Kormilda IYLP students Sami Fitzgerald, Tristan Morton and Aqib Williams, accompanied by Maureen Taurima recently attended the annual IYLP Gathering in Sydney, held at the Olympic Village in Homebush.

For Sami it was her first visit to Sydney.

“The IYLP National Gathering was great. We met other people from different places and made new friends. I met people that played different sports. We worked together a lot and had a great time. My group won a $50 gift voucher each for coming first in making the group video,” an excited Sami said.

Triston and Aquib were also thrilled at the opportunity to be there.

“We had lots of fun and met 65 other students from around Australia. We enjoyed a quiz night and games and we were kept busy all the time. We went on the Tribal Cultural Cruise, which was so cold for us!” they said.

Below is a report of the four day event, from Dewarra Housemistress, Maureen Taurima

We flew out on Wednesday for the annual IYLP Gathering in Sydney. The flight was great and Sami was extremely excited as it was her first trip to Sydney. We were greeted at the airport and transported to the Olympic Village in Homebush where we settled into our accommodation at the Quest Motel.

(Free Time) An early start and off to Westfield shopping centre for a couple of hours.
The remaining IYLP students arrived and we met at the sports centre for the Smith Family welcoming followed by Team Building with the Group Leaders.
After dinner the students participated in more Team Building activities with the Everest Team Events group.

An early start for a full day with the Works Inspirations team who challenged the students with a range of activities, which had them fully engaged.
The night was busy, after dinner we played Indigenous Trivial pursuit and Cyber Safety.

Another early start with each team making a music video and after lunch the Tribal Warrior Cruise.
The evening was spent at the sports centre for the formal dinner and speeches.

We had an early start to the day to catch our plane at 9.10am, arriving back in Darwin at 1.30pm. It was a pleasure for me to be a part of this event. The students were beautifully mannered and their behaviour exemplary. True role models for Kormilda.
