A World of Opportunity

Haileybury Rendall School Darwin to Open

I am pleased to announce that one of Australia’s leading schools, Haileybury, has reached agreement with Kormilda College and the Northern Territory Government to acquire the Kormilda College site and operations from 1 January next year.

Haileybury Rendall School will open in Darwin at the start of the 2018 school year (‘Rendall’ commemorates Charles Rendall who founded Haileybury in Melbourne in 1892). Haileybury Kormilda Boarding for Aboriginal students will remain a key part of the new operations.

Haileybury Rendall School will be wholly owned by Haileybury Melbourne. It will operate as its own entity with fees and an education program tailored to the Darwin market. Haileybury Rendall School will be a vibrant member of the Haileybury family with full access to Haileybury's well-proven educational systems and resources. The School will be led by Haileybury Senior Vice Principal Craig Glass who will take up the position of founding Principal of Haileybury Rendall School.

Craig has led the Haileybury education program for nine years and is directly responsible for our exceptional academic outcomes. He is an outstanding education leader, thinker and manager. Craig will take up his role at the start of Term 3, 2017 to manage the transition. His wife Kerry Glass, also an outstanding teacher and education leader, will join Craig on the staff, as will other educators from among Haileybury's five other campuses.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Kormilda’s current Principal, Dr Helen Spiers, for her continuing hard work in ensuring a smooth transition and look forward to her leading the College for the remainder of the year.

Haileybury Rendall School’s Education Program will be aligned with the Haileybury Melbourne program. From 2018 it will operate an Early Learning Centre through to Year 12. We will outline the full range of programs early in Term 3, 2017.

Haileybury Rendall School will add further breadth to the Haileybury network, which includes four campuses in Melbourne and another just out of Beijing, China. Haileybury also delivers the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) in six other cities in China as well as in Timor-Leste and the Philippines. We will open an international boarding school as a part of Haileybury Rendall School.

We warmly welcome all our Darwin students into the Haileybury education community. This includes access to a curriculum and teaching method that consistently ranks us academically as one of Australia’s best schools. The Australian newspaper’s 2016 national test ranking saw Haileybury ranked number two of all co-education primary schools in Australia. This is a result of our explicit instruction approach to literacy and numeracy, which brings out the best in each individual student. The Haileybury Institute, another wholly-owned Haileybury entity, has worked with more than 100 schools around Australia to deliver this ground-breaking program and we look forward to introducing it to Haileybury Rendall School.

Haileybury is fully committed to the Aboriginal boarding program and to providing strong education outcomes through our day school. We are pleased to continue the long tradition of Aboriginal boarding that began 28 years ago. To acknowledge this, the boarding program will be known as Haileybury Kormilda Boarding.

When they graduate, our Darwin students will join the Haileybury Alumni network, which has more than 16,000 members around the world and is an important resource when students enter tertiary study and the workforce. All graduates also become members of the Old Haileyburians Association.

Haileybury acknowledges that the Board of Kormilda has worked hard to find the best outcome for all of the Kormilda community. We appreciate the good faith in which negotiations took place and look forward to working with the Kormilda Board and the School leadership team on the transition. We also appreciate the strong support of the Northern Territory and Commonwealth governments.

Haileybury is committed to the individual success of each of our students and we look forward to delivering world-class education in Darwin. Haileybury Rendall School Principal Craig Glass will be in Darwin from the start of Term 3, and both Craig and I look forward to personally welcoming you all to the Haileybury community.

For all enquiries in the meantime, please contact Craig Glass via email: craig.glass@haileybury.vic.edu.au
